Equal Opportunities Policy for Student Selection

Disability Strategy

1. Introduction

London Innovative Studies is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment where students with disabilities or special needs have equal access to education and support. This strategy outlines our commitment to meeting the needs of students with disabilities and identifies pathways for accessing additional support when necessary.

2. Objectives

  • Ensure that all students with disabilities have access to the resources and accommodations required for their success.
  • Provide an inclusive environment that respects diversity and addresses individual needs.
  • Offer guidance on seeking external support when the College is unable to fully meet specific needs.

3. Support and Resources

London Innovative Studies provides the following support for students with disabilities:

  • Accessible Facilities: We aim to provide accessible facilities across campus, including ramps, lifts, and accessible bathrooms.
  • Academic Adjustments: Academic accommodations, such as extra time for assignments and exams, use of assistive technology, and flexible deadlines, are provided where needed.
  • Learning Support: Access to learning resources tailored to specific needs, including assistive technology, note-taking services, and one-on-one tutoring sessions.
  • Advisory Services: A dedicated Disability Support Advisor to offer guidance and assist students in accessing support services.

4. Procedure for Requesting Disability Support

  1. Initial Disclosure: Students are encouraged to disclose their disability at the time of admission or as soon as they require support.
  2. Consultation: The Disability Support Advisor will meet with students to assess their needs and determine appropriate accommodations.
  3. Documentation: Students may be asked to provide documentation of their disability, such as medical reports or assessments, to aid in the support planning process.
  4. Implementation: Reasonable accommodations will be put in place, and ongoing support will be provided based on the agreed plan.

5. External Support for Special Needs

Where the College is unable to fully meet a student’s specific needs, students will be advised to seek additional guidance and support from external bodies such as:

  • UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs): Provides advice on support and services for international students with disabilities in the UK, including visa and legal matters.
  • Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA): UK students may be eligible for DSA to assist with additional costs related to their disability.
  • Local NHS Services: Health and counseling services are available for students whose needs require specialized medical or psychological support.
  • Other Specialized Support Organizations: Charities and organizations focused on specific disabilities (e.g., RNIB for visually impaired students, British Dyslexia Association).

6. Training and Awareness

London Innovative Studies will provide training and resources for staff to:

  • Increase awareness of disabilities and the importance of inclusivity.
  • Educate staff on the use of assistive technology and adjustments.
  • Ensure that faculty and staff can support students with disabilities in an empathetic and effective manner.

7. Monitoring and Review

The Disability Strategy will be reviewed annually to:

  • Ensure that support services meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Identify areas for improvement and expansion of services.
  • Maintain compliance with UK disability legislation and best practices.

By following this strategy, London Innovative Studies ensures that all students with disabilities are supported, with access to both internal and external resources as needed, creating a truly inclusive educational environment.
